Education

Educational programs are an important and vital part of Telluride Theatre and SquidShow’s mission. Telluride Theatre provides opportunities for members of the community to explore not only the world of our productions, but also the related ideas and themes that resonate within our lives. Using SquidShow’s unique methods of play-building, physical training & group collaboration, we provide an experience that is about creating art that originates from within the student performer’s own life and consciousness. The following programs are offered for theater lovers of all ages. For more information or to be added to the mailing list for any of the programs below, please contact Executive Director and Educational Program Coordinator, Colin Sullivan at colintsullivan@gmail.com.

Join artistic director of SquidShow Theatre, Sasha Cucciniello, Melissa Sumpter (of Durango’s Salt Fire Circus), and our favorite cross dressing performer Sasha Golavenko as they take you on a seven-week journey into the world of burlesque. From the dance moves, to taking it all off… from the boas to the pasties students will develop their very own Burlesque character and walk away with a full routine with a set of pasties, and a burlesque portrait. At the close of the class, students will be given the opportunity to perform at BURLESQUE, a live variety show on the stage of the Sheridan Opera House, a benefit for SquidShow Theatre!

In this unique 4-week theatre program, students will work with company members of Telluride’s infamous SquidShow Theatre Company to create an original theatrical extravaganza from scratch. The program will be focused on refining young performers’ education through games, exercises and rigorous training, using SquidShow’s signature style. Through a combination of physical theatre, clowning, improvisation, and script analysis, the performers will gather the skills to advance their own artistic excellence as both actors and playmakers in the modern theatre. While working on individual acting skills, students will also be immersed in other areas of play-construction; including playwriting, costume/prop assembly, and music composition.  Participants will be quickly initiated into the companys unique style of performance, which integrates original dance, comedy, art, music and theatre to create professional theatrical extravaganzas packed full of surprises, amazing characters, strong stage presence and wacky fun. The course will culminate in a FREE original performance, written and acted by the students. This experience will challenge young theatre artists to grow as actors, build their confidence, teach artistic collaboration and expand and develop their ability to create their own original thought-provoking theatrical events.
